Addiction Now: Safe Injection Facilities
218 W. Saratoga St., Baltimore MD, 21201 May 18, 2017, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Join us as we consider the value of introducing safe injection facilities as a public health strategy.
Get educated about “harm reduction” as an approach to substance use, how it fits into the larger landscape of substance use prevention and addiction treatment, and what kind of cultural shift needs to happen to make this solution more possible, less controversial. We welcome Sarah Evans, a senior program manager with the Open Society Foundation’s Public Health Program, who formerly coordinated operations for Insite, North America’s first legal supervised drug injection facility. We also welcome Dr. Greg Hobelmann, physician at Ashley Addiction Treatment and New Day Campaign advisory board member, who will talk about how harm reduction policies can most effectively complement more traditional treatment services. Other event participants will be singer Simone Speed, author Clarence Brown, and staff of Powell Recovery Center, whose testimonials underscore the dangers of using drugs unsupervised. The first 30 minutes of the event will feature drop-in opioid overdose response trainings led by the Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition. After a 10-minute training, you can walk away with the naloxone kit that makes it possible to save someone’s life from an opioid overdose. Click here for more information.
